God Fights for His Own

17 But the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.

18 And Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?

19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’? I might have taken her as my wife. Now therefore, here is your wife; take her and go your way.”

20 So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, with his wife and all that he had.

[Genesis 12:17-20]

I think you’ll agree with me that from the human point of view, God was harsh on Pharaoh and his house. He genuinely didn’t know Sarah was Abraham’s wife. He thought he had found some other terra nullius, an ownerless land to conquer. However, God jumped to the defence of  Abraham, though he’d told a blatant lie.

We may come up with several possible reasons why God overlooked Abraham’s fault and fought for him. However, the simplest and the most straight-forward for me is that, God came to the defence of Abraham just because of His covenant with Abraham. Abraham is a Child of God, and God wouldn’t sit down and see him suffer, even if it’s his own fault. If your child goes and misbehaves in town and s/he is being molested, you won’t stand aloof and say it serves him/her right. You’ll jump to his/her defence and rescue your child. Then when you get home, you’ll deal with that child. It’s now a family affair. The same applies to spouses. They don’t join family members and third parties in disgracing their significant other in public. They find a way of ameliorating the situation, and when they get home they deal with the matter as a family affair.

God fought for Abraham when he put himself in deep crisis. May He fight for you as well and defend you. May His good Word come to pass in your life, no matter your mistakes. Amen
